Airtel increases GPRS mobile internet access cost before full 3G launch

Costlier data transfer rates by Airtel across India. Increase in GPRS mobile internet service access charge cost before 3G launch.

Known to be the pioneer of mobile internet, Airtel has been instrumental in introducing world class mobile network services ranging from GPRS mobile internet to caller tunes. Airtel s superior customer support resulted into it becoming the biggest mobile operator in terms of mobile subscribers throughout India. Globally Airtel is the fifth biggest Mobile network operator in terms of subscriber base. Airtel was known to offer great services at affordable prices but now one of its premiere service is set to become more costlier.

Bharti Airtel revised its GPRS charges. The charges are increased from 30p/50KB to 30p/20KB. Thereby they have hiked the GPRS charges by around 150 percent. Now for downloading 1 MB one would need to pay Rs.15, earlier it was comparatively less i.e. Rs.6/MB. The new tariff plan will come to effect from 5th Jan 2011. New customers who have taken Airtel connection within the last 6 months will be charged in the old tariff until they complete their first six months of continued Airtel usage. After which they will be charged according to the newly laid tariff rates. Airtel has also announced that browsing their WAP portal Airtel Live will be charged at a rate of 30p/20KB, starting from 28th Dec 2010. Airtel 3G will be launched in January 2011, every body had expectations that data transfer tariffs would lower, but instead they have only increased. Browsing internet on a 2G EDGE enabled mobile has become quite a costly endeavor.

At this moment many GPRS providers have been changing their older access rates, while the state owned BSNL has only lowered prices, others in the game like Tata Docomo, Vodafone, Idea have been busy making changes. A 150 percent hike in GPRS access rate is quite a bad thing for end subscriber. The end user for Airtel would now need to stick with a limited mobile phone internet data access plan which would not cost him considerably less. With 3G services coming to life in PAN India, hopefully mobile internet would then get cheaper.

Airtel has always provided the best of service, whether it be customer care or better network. Now that airtel enjoys the numero uno position in th mobile network subscriber leaderboard, it seems to have taken its customers for granted. Greed will lead to loss of mobile service subscriber for Airtel.
