4G Mobile service network

Non geek talk about the upcoming 4G mobile technology. A evaluation of criteria for succession of 3G network by 4G. Download speed and capacity of the network service across a spectrum.

Irrespective of all the talk that 4G has been finalized and will be put into effect, the most has been nothing but rumor. 4G technology is currently under development and its successor remains to be selected. Please pardon me if I involve geeky things in this one sided conversation. This site has always been a place for logical talk hence I will try to keep usage of technical terms to its minimum level.

The mobile network started as 1G phase i.e. in 1981, 2G was tested and standardized sometime in 1992 while 3G mobile technology was standardized in 2001. As you can note, there has been a time lag of 10 years between standardization of new network protocol. It takes extensive research and enormous input and development on the side of mobile equipment manufacturers to devise and make a certain network capacity available to qualify for certain criterias set by representatives of the global electronics and communication industry. Currently the required criteria for 4G network is being able to reach a peak download speed of 1 Gigabits per second while allowing for upload speeds of up to 500 Megabits per second. Such a download speed would allow for download of a 1 Gigabyte file in a matter of 8 seconds when at the peak state. Considering that most high quality movies are of 1 GB or a little more in size, the downloader would be able to download them in a matter of 10 seconds only!

In order to qualify for these criterion, many network solutions were presented. They all had to allow for the maximum peak download speed in a 20 MegaHertz spectrum capacity. Since currently only LTE Advanced has been able to qualify for such a criteria, it is being considered as the next generation of mobile phone technology after 3G. Many phones which are recently being branded as 4G use LTE Advanced technology for communication. We would however warn readers from buying 4G phones this early as the mobile network is still in testing stage and it may get developed within the next coming few years. Its best to buy a 4G mobile phone in 2015 or later as that would be the period when the network will reach its stable capacity.

Before LTE Advanced qualified for 4G criteria, many had thought that eventually WiMax (802.16 successor of Wi-Fi ) would be the successor for 3G network, but eventually it was unable to make its mark. An advanced variant of Wi-Max is being tested in order to qualify for the 4G criteria of Download Link speed. Since no official statement has come up from any standards organization with regard to acceptance of a certain technology as 4G, Wi-Max advanced still stands a chance to get selected as 3G successor network service.

Various other network technologies like UMB, Flash-OFDM, iBurst and MBWA systems were expected to be the next level of mobile networking, however all of them have now been discontinued from being researched upon and developed. These networks may be used in parallel with the existing mobile infrastructure depending upon the mood of each nations government in allotting spectrum. Currently only LTE Advanced can be considered as possible contestant of 4G mobile service technology.
